Our Story
A Proud Heritage in the Clare Valley
With over 170 years of history, The Rising Sun was Auburn’s first commercial building and has been a proud landmark of the Clare Valley since 1851. Open daily for relaxed lunches, hearty dinners, casual drinks in the original front bar, and cosy rooms offering travellers a warm, historic welcome.
A Heritage Legacy
The pub was first licensed in 1851, making it not only Auburn’s first commercial building but also one of the oldest continually operating pubs in South Australia. Originally known as The Rising Sun Inn, it served as an essential hub for travellers and locals in the early days of settlement.
At its inception, the inn featured 18 rooms, stone stables, a loft, and a garden, providing much-needed facilities for weary travellers and their horses. Operated by its first licensee, Joseph E. Bleechmore, until 1871, the inn quickly became a cornerstone of the growing township of Auburn.
In 1862, The Rising Sun Inn marked a major milestone in regional communication history when its loft became the first site in the area to receive a telegraph message. This event symbolised Auburn’s growing importance as a central hub in the Clare Valley.
Evolution Over the Years
By 1904, the inn had evolved and was renamed The Rising Sun Hotel, reflecting its growing reputation as a premium establishment. Just a few years later, in 1907, a new bluestone building was constructed in front of the original structure, showcasing the architectural elegance that remains a defining feature of the property today. This was followed by significant upgrades to the accommodation and catering wings by local builder S.P. Stephens, ensuring the hotel’s facilities kept pace with modern expectations.
Through decades of change, The Rising Sun Hotel has remained true to its heritage, offering a blend of historical charm and warm hospitality. Its verandah, stonework, and original bar have been carefully preserved, inviting guests to step back in time while enjoying all the comforts of a modern visit.
